Introducing a Weekly Free Writing Space
Freewrite Fridays: A quiet hour of writing every Friday.
there’s an idea i have been toying with for a while. an accountable, community space for writers.
i have been experimenting with various formats for the past two years. i wrote to people offering to be their accountability partner. i launched a monthly writing community called storytellers collective. i researched community-run creative spaces.
i have attended and designed several workshops. in my experience, many people show up at workshops only to get some space to write in a structured, disciplined environment. i often attend workshops for the same reason. i offer them for the same reason.
after a lot of experimenting, i decided to come back to the basics and start with what’s simple.
introducing freewrite fridays.
a space to freewrite for an hour every week. it’s free. it’s on fridays, 7-8 pm ist, on google meet. it’s not a workshop. it’s not a writing class. there’s no structure, no teaching, no feedback, no discussion.
it’s just a space i created for someone like myself who wishes to dedicate one hour to writing every week, come what may.
i chose a whatsapp channel as the home for this because it’s private, spam-free, and simple. no group chats, no noise. you will hear from me once or twice a week, only to share the call link and a reminder.
here’s the link to the whatsapp channel: Freewrite Fridays
once you join, here’s how the friday sessions work:
the session runs in two 25-minute writing sprints with a 5-minute break in between. i'll share my screen with a quiet ambient playlist during the sprints. when the music plays, we write. when it stops, we pause, stretch, breathe, maybe walk a bit.
bring whatever you are working on. a journal entry, a linkedin post, a love letter, a poem, a chapter. anything.
some housekeeping:
keep your cameras on if you can. it’s an online space, and the energy of the room shifts when people see each other writing. you don’t need to look presentable. show up in your pyjamas, at a bus stop, with food. as long as you’re writing, you’re doing great.
stay on mute throughout. no talking, no discussion. this is a writing space. we show up, write, and leave. that’s also why this is a whatsapp channel and not a group. so that it stays quiet and doesn’t become another archived mute whatsapp group.
leave anytime you need to. no questions asked. it’s your space, your time.
i will be as much a participant as all of you. i am writing alongside you.
i hope we can all show up for ourselves, especially on the days when it feels impossible.
see you on fridays. 7-8 pm.

This is such a lovely, wholesome initiative
I am in!
